Philadelphia Contemporary

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

J/GA’s design proposal for an addition to the Philadelphia Contemporary Museum focused on multi-purpose, flexible gallery and public spaces, including a winter garden and a rooftop public space. The project posed the questions: "What does the Museum of the Future look like?” and "Who is and who should be the Audience?” The Proposal sought to engage the local community and explore elemental themes of the design included Flexibility, Porosity and Connectivity. The roof in our concept was a public park, the design played with the tension of the form of the building and what could be artfully hidden, creating the opportunity for discovery. By understanding the normative and ordinary through the lens of art we begin to understand how the Museum, as an institution, has the opportunity to educate, but must also capture the imaginative spirit of its visitors.
